The financial technology industry in Vancouver is growing steadily, a report by the Digital Finance Institute said. The report added that the FinTech ecosystem in Vancouver remains small but is collaborative and its proximity to the Silicon Valley and Asian markets could be an advantage.
Financial technology, also known as FinTech, is an industry composed of companies that use new technology and innovation with available resources in order to compete in the marketplace of traditional financial institutions and intermediaries in the delivery of financial services. FinTech companies consist of both startups and established financial and technology companies trying to replace or enhance the usage of financial services of incumbent companies.
The Vancouver-based Digital Finance Institute came to the conclusion that interest in the FinTech scene in Canada was growing based on results of analytics of its websites and social media interest. The Vancouver FinTech conference website saw double the numbers of visitors compared to the website of its Toronto conference.
The website was visited by almost every global bank, hedge fund and global investment firm, thousands of government regulatory agencies globally, the institute said. Institutions like United Nations, NATO, NASA, and even the Executive Office of the President of the United States were also interested, it added.
The Vancouver FinTech conference gained huge social media reach too with the Twitter page reaching one million users while the Toronto conference’s twitter only saw a much smaller number despite being a bigger event. Vancouver received interest in FinTech from 143 countries whereas Toronto only from 88 countries. Totally the Institute receives close to 4,000 visitors a month and reached 138 countries in 2016.FinTech in Vancouver is a much more searched topic and based on the websites analytics it appears that Vancouver is twice as popular as Toronto in the scene.
